FIC.UBA joins the new IBERSHORTS Award for Ibero-American fiction and animation short films

Starting this year, the winning fiction and animation short films from FIC.UBA’s Ibero-American Competition will be in the running for the IBERSHORTS Award, a new initiative led by the Málaga Film Festival in collaboration with Festhome.

Set to debut at the festival’s 29th edition, taking place from March 6–15, 2026, the award aims to spotlight the best of Ibero-American short filmmaking (including Portugal and excluding Spain) and will be part of the festival’s official lineup.

A total of 29 festivals from 20 countries are participating in the initiative. Short films awarded by either the jury or the audience at FIC.UBA will automatically qualify for consideration, along with winners from other partner festivals across the region. A selection committee appointed by the Málaga Film Festival and Festhome will choose five finalists, whose films will be screened during the event and featured in industry activities at the Málaga Short Corner, part of MAFIZ / Spanish Screenings Content.

The winner of the IBERSHORTS Award will receive the Silver Biznaga for Best Ibero-American Fiction Short Film 2025 during the festival’s official short film awards ceremony. All finalists will also be invited to attend the event in Málaga.

This recognition opens new doors for the short films featured in our Ibero-American competition. IBERSHORTS offers a powerful platform to amplify their visibility in one of the most important spaces for Spanish-language cinema”, said Ricardo Alfonsín, director of FIC.UBA.

The addition of the IBERSHORTS Award marks an important step toward expanding the international reach of Ibero-American short films and creating new opportunities for emerging filmmakers.
