International Feature Film Competition
In the rural setting of Tepoztlán, south of Mexico City, Karla is a young trans woman who challenges the prejudices of her social environment while affirming her identity, not without difficulty. Over eight years, the camera of young Spanish transfeminist filmmaker and activist Kani Lapuerta followed this process to create a powerful visual diary in which the protagonist turns her body into a political act and a symbol of dissent against the dominant gender binary. Karla’s story proposes an intimate exploration of the daily struggles faced by those who seek to define their place within a society that does not understand, and often rejects, any difference.
