El diablo fuma
The Devil Smokes
International Feature Film Competition
Set in Mexico City during the 1990s, Ernesto Martínez Bucio’s Berlinale 2025 award-winning film tells the story of five siblings who, after the disappearance of their parents, fall under the care of their grandmother. All unfolds in an enclosed space where the elderly woman, marked by mistrust and bouts of mental instability, imposes restrictions. “The Devil is like flies: they land on you when your flesh is rotting, and no matter how much you shoo them away, they always come back,” she warns them. In this context, the children live out their daily existence in a limbo where the boundary between reality and imagination blurs into the fantastic.
