La Perra
International Feature Film Competition
On a remote Chilean island, a woman in her forties makes a living collecting seaweed with her partner. Childless and leading a peaceful life, she adopts a stray dog with whom she develops a deep bond, until the animal disappears on New Year’s Eve, frightened by the fireworks. The loss awakens an old grief linked to a childhood episode involving a family who once visited the island. Based on the novel of the same name by Colombian author Pilar Quintana, the film transposes the original story, set in Colombia, to the arid landscape of southern Chilean Patagonia. With a narrative that moves between present and past without conventional transitions, Dominga Sotomayor’s film explores female solitude and the bond between a woman and her surroundings.
