Whispers in May
Chun Ri Huan You
International Feature Film Competition
Qihuo, 14, gets her first period and with it crosses the threshold into adulthood marked by the traditions of the Yi people in southern China. With her migrant parents far from home and left to care for her younger siblings after her grandfather’s death, the teenager balances family responsibilities with school and carefree moments with her friends. When she confesses that she has reached puberty, a milestone that in her community means she is now able to work and marry, the three girls set out on a journey in search of the traditional skirt that symbolises this transition. Filmed as an improvised fiction made together with the director, the journey combines rural landscapes, encounters with different people, and cultural observations. A Yi poem accompanies the story, reflecting on the historical fate of women in the community.

Whispers in May is her second feature.
