A selection of short films by Alice Guy, now recognised as the first female director in the history of cinema. At the end of the nineteenth century, when the Cinématographe was taking its first steps, Alice, then a secretary at Gaumont, proposed making short films to promote the sale of cameras and projectors. In 1896, she made La Fée aux choux, which became a success and is considered the first fiction film in cinema history. Gaumont entrusted her with directing its fiction film production department, making her the most influential woman in cinema at the time. Alice created a pioneering body of work comprising more than 1,000 short films between 1896 and 1920, with Gaumont in France and, in the United States, through her Solax Company in New York. Her films made a decisive contribution to the development of cinematic storytelling and opened an exceptional path for women in cinema.
