Rabia is ten years old and refuses to accept the sudden closure of her school in a rural village in Pakistan. While the adults offer only evasive answers and rumours circulate about a mythical creature that may have possessed her teacher, she sets out alone in search of answers. Her mother, alone and exhausted, has little room to question what is happening. Amid superstition, feudal power, and bureaucratic indifference, British-Pakistani director Seemab Gul combines documentary and fiction to create a measured fable about the state’s neglect of rural education and gender injustice, sustained by the clear-eyed perspective of a girl who refuses to remain silent.
