Clara is a young Quechua midwife whose singing eases the pain of pregnant women in her community in Bolivia’s Cochabamba Valley. Her mother Ana, an experienced midwife, sees this gift as a miracle from the gods and hopes Clara will inherit her place. But news arriving by radio from the city and the influence of a friend begin to draw the young woman away from her mother, until she decides to leave. After her departure, the community suffers what they see as a “punishment” attributed to her absence. Ana then sets out for the city to bring her daughter back. In this way, the film turns a local story and an intimate dilemma into a universal reflection.
