Colonial Mexico, 17th century. Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, a poet and nun known as the Tenth Muse, confronts the Church and the Inquisition for daring to seek knowledge. Protected by the viceroys and watched by the archbishop, her intellectual fervour and passionate relationship with the Viceroy’s wife lead her into an implacable siege. Inspired by Octavio Paz’s essay.
María Luisa Bemberg
María Luisa Bemberg began her career in theatre in 1959 and made her directorial debut at the age of 58 with Momentos (1981). Her work explores women’s condition in the face of Argentine patriarchal society. Camila (1984) was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. She died in Buenos Aires in 1995 while working on the screenplay for El impostor.
