In a suburban neighbourhood on the outskirts of Tokyo, families lead quiet lives shaped by everyday routines, neighbourhood relationships, and the unspoken codes of community. Among them are the brothers Minoru and Isamu, two young boys fascinated by the growing popularity of television in postwar Japan and determined to have a set of their own. When their parents refuse to buy them a television, the brothers respond by refusing to speak, turning silence into a form of protest.
