In Picuí, in northeastern Brazil, a group of scientists experiments with uranium in search of a more effective method of combating the mosquito that transmits dengue and yellow fever. When the experiments fail, a small group of researchers and miners must face the consequences, which threaten to develop into an apocalyptic catastrophe. Tiago Melo’s second fiction feature is rooted in the real history of the region’s uranium deposits, reportedly linked to the Manhattan Project, to construct a story that combines pulp-style science fiction with a portrait of local folklore and life. Against this backdrop, deformed characters wander through a decaying landscape while workers resist the forces of global capital, in a story that combines fantastical elements with the concrete realities of the region.
